LASO Letras Blog
The LASO Letras Blog goes from basic to brilliant as needed. We'll post everything ranging from the agenda to our next meeting to action items for a particular event.

We'll also post those deep thoughts triggered in your head after a great History lecture, or maybe the poem inspired by listening to one of our visiting authors.

So come back often or updates and submit your ideas sooner than later.

Noon- 1 pm: Women's History Month: Super Latina Power Hour

Women's Resource Center

Guest Speaker: Lone Star Alum, Judge Debra Ibarra Mayfield-the first Latina county court at law judge in Harris County.

Judge Debra Ibarra Mayfield was unanimously appointed judge of Harris County Civil Court at Law Number One by the bipartisan Commissioners' Court in 2011. She is the first Latina county court at law judge in Harris County.

In 2012 and 2014, she was elected by the citizens of Harris County to continue her service as judge.

Before taking the bench, Judge Mayfield was a partner in a mid-sized civil defense firm, where she had a statewide litigation and appellate practice. She also served the civil courts in various capacities, including as a guardian ad litem protecting the interests of minor children, often to Spanish-only speaking families. Part of the first generation in her family to attend college, Judge Mayfield is an alumnus of Texas A&M University and South Texas College of Law. She also attended Lone Star College.

Judge Mayfield devotes her time to serving the bar and the community. She frequently speaks to legal and community groups and area schools about the importance of jury service, running for public office, and the court system. Often, she hosts students of all ages and grade levels in her court to help facilitate educational opportunities they might not otherwise experience. She also served the bar as a pastpresident of the Mexican American Bar Association of Houston.

Most recently, Judge Mayfield was recognized as a "Woman on the Move" by Texas Executive Women, an annual honor to ten women who exemplify the best of Houston's top female leaders. She also received the 2014 "Public Service Award" from South Texas College of Law and the 2014 Amicus Award from the Mexican American Bar Association of Houston.
