LASO Letras Blog
The LASO Letras Blog goes from basic to brilliant as needed. We'll post everything ranging from the agenda to our next meeting to action items for a particular event.

We'll also post those deep thoughts triggered in your head after a great History lecture, or maybe the poem inspired by listening to one of our visiting authors.

So come back often or updates and submit your ideas sooner than later.

LASO Gives Back to the Community

by Team LASO on 10/14/14

The Latin American Student Organization (LASO)

Creates Grants & Workshops by Latino College Students

For Latino Families.

"I needed someone to tell me how important it is to take school more seriously at a younger age. Now, I can be that someone for others."-- Jacob Gonzalez, LASO member, graduated 2012 from Spring High School, from north Houston

We need volunteers to help with our biggest event of the year: Día de La Familia Saturday, October 25, 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, at LSC-NH. This is our chance to give back to the community. Families of high school or middle school students can register online: Here.

LASO will be offering unique panels and unique grants intended to get more Latino students into college. These workshops are unique because they have been designed by Latino students for Latino students and their families. The grants will be awarded and the panels will be conducted at the half-day conference "Dia de La Familia: Getting More Community into Community College". Panels will be in English and Spanish.

The grants include:

2 - Día de La Familia Grants ($250): These grants enable a parent and child to take a course together at LSC-NH.

5- Dreamer Grants: ($300-$600) Free legal representation for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) applications or renewals, donated by Monty & Ramirez LLP.

This is in addition to one $1,000 scholarship for courses at Lone Star College-North Harris.

Panels include:

  • What I wish My Parents Had Known About College
  • "My Story: The Mom of a First Year College Student Shares Advice."
  • The Power of Your Vote: Meet Your Elected Representatives /El Poder de Su Voto: Conozca a Sus Representantes
  • Immigration Forum: DACA and Grants for Your Child/El Estado de la Reforma Migratoria: DACA y Becas para su Hijo
  • Career and Program Exhibit

For the complete line up click here: Día de La Familia Agenda.

The event is geared toward Hispanic families of high school or middle school students. The grants and panels were designed by current Latino college students who remember what that was like for their families.

"It is important to give back to the community because that is how people get ahead in life. We can always help someone regardless of the situation. We should remember that someone helped us to get to where we are. No one is that awesome or invincible that they got to where they are alone." ---Maria Balderas, LASO member, former member of the armed forces.
